Tips for launching yourself as a professional DJ

By Louise Redman

People who fancy themselves to have good DJ skills, and who are looking for a new career, might want to think about going into business as a professional DJ. Playing sets at weddings, parties, bars and clubs can earn you quite a bit of extra money.

Finding the right DJ equipment should be your first priority if you want to launch your own DJ business. In addition to headphones, DJ decks, speakers and amps, you will also need a microphone and a DJ mixer. All of these bits of kit, along with a laptop equipped with music mixing software, can be found online.

Once you have your DJ equipment, you need to make sure you practice all of the time. Make playlists and pre-mixes for different audiences and for different types of events, and start building your music collection. This way, if you get a call about a last-minute job, you are more likely to be prepared.

In order to start booking gigs, you need to get the word out there. Set up your own website offering your services, making sure to include all of your contact details.

It might also be a good idea to track down and get in contact with other new DJs offering the same services as you, so that if one of you can't make a gig, you can give the other a good lead.

With your website set up, your DJ equipment bought and hired, it is now time to think about transport. Once you have a suitable vehicle ready to take you and your gear to gigs, you should also arrange to take out an insurance policy for public liability and for all your DJ equipment.
