Wesley Pentz, also known as DIPLO, is considered a cutting-edge curator in the music industry. Working alongside the world's most famous producers and DJs, Pentz has come out on top more than once. From his hits that have topped the chart to his presence in the club circuit, Pentz doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. From a record label and unstoppable collaborations to a charity and even a documentary, Pentz simply does it all.
In 1978, DIPLO was born in Tupelo, Missisippi. Throughout a majority of his childhood, Pentz worked at his father's bait shop in Florida. Thanks to MTV, Pentz was introduced to the ever-changing world of music. He was inspired by everything from the Miami Bass of Florida to the Southern hip hop of the West. Pentz decided to move to Philadelphia when he was 18 in order to pursue a college education. While at Temple University, he studied Film and Music. While working as a social worker in South Philadelphia during college, he formed the Hollertronix club night.
The gigs and parties were successful and the two eventually releases two separate mix tapes. One of the tapes - Never Scared-was listed as one of New York Times' top 10 albums of the year. As he rose to fame, Diplo worked closely with M.I.A.-a British artist who helped him gain exposure early in his career.
Since working with M.I.A. at the beginning of his career, Pentz has partnered up with several other big names in the music industry. He's worked with Santigold, Missy Elliot and Lil' Jon, as well as with Radiohead, Beck and Britney Spears for remix work. Pentz got together with Dave Taylor, also known as Switch, in 2009 and released the album "Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers do."
Diplo went from an unknown DJ playing small gigs in Philadelphia to somewhat of a worldwide music sensation. And he's not done yet. 2012 is already proving to be a big year for him. He's releasing a book in April titled 128 Beats Per Minute: Diplo's Visual Guide to Music, Culture, and Everything in Between. The book is said to chronicle his travels across the globe as well as list songs that have inspired him along the way. In addition, Diplo has concerts scheduled throughout the year in places like Sweden, New York, Miami, and California.
